How a project runs
Every project
begins with
a conversation.
No two gardens run to the same timetable, but most follow roughly this shape. We’ll agree what’s right for yours before anything is committed to.
A conversation
Usually email or phone. We talk about your garden, what you’re hoping for, and whether it feels like a good fit.
A site visit
I come and see the space in person. The soil, the aspect, the views, what’s already thriving and what isn’t. We shape the brief together.
The design
Layout and flow first, then planting, materials and the details. You see it develop and have your say as it goes.
Into the ground
Planting plans and schedules you or your contractor can actually work from, designed to settle in and get better with age.
Fees
Upfront
about costs.
I like to be upfront about costs. Design work and sourcing materials are charged at £60 per hour. Practical work such as setting out and planting is charged at £40 per hour.
For larger projects, I work in stages. Before beginning each stage, I’ll outline what’s involved and give you an estimate of the hours needed, so you know what you’re committing to before work begins.
You might commission me to develop a concept and plan for your garden, or continue through detailed design, planting plans, sourcing and implementation. You only pay for the level of input you need.
My approach
What I want to bring to every design is a mixture of creativity, curiosity and practicality. That starts with understanding how a space will really be used, what is already there and what the site can support, then finding opportunities to make it more beautiful, more interesting and more alive. Each design should feel individual to the place and the people who use it, rather than imposing a particular style upon it.
The best spaces have life in them, evolving with the seasons, supporting wildlife and becoming richer over time.
Based in Hertfordshire, I work with private homeowners, hospitality venues and public spaces to create gardens and landscapes that are rooted in their surroundings.
Where it comes from
I trained in Garden Design at Capel Manor College and continue my studies with a focus on Plants and Planting Design. Fieldwork with St Andrews Botanic Garden and The Serge Hill Project, including involvement in Untangling Plants and The Tangled Bank, has shaped my ecological design approach.
Alongside that, years of practical, hands-on garden maintenance work have given me an understanding of what gardens need to not just look good on a plan, but work in the ground and over time.
